- The course provides opportunities to explore the world of startups, stories reaching from original idea to sale, succesful independence -- or failure. Further investigated will be tales of various takeovers, a fate of many startups but of mature businesses as well. Takeovers are often disguised as mergers, so we´ll take a look at functional mergers as well as those turning out to be Märchen, or fairy tales.
Students will practice researching real examples of their own choice, critically evaluating these in terms of factors to be considered in class, then presenting conclusions. Both orally and in writing, students will explain procedures and events and formulate clear arguments to expresss their analyses. In the end, students should have substantially widened vocabulary, developed abilities to grasp nuances and even manipulation in written texts, learned differences in oral and written presentation technique, and differentiated their own oral registers according to situation.
Prepared texts designed to refine critical reading, simulated interviews and reporting roles, mock firm-internal debate, oral presentation and (differing) written presentation of research conclusions.
To be both researched by students and supplied by instructor.
This is a UNIcert C1 course, so 80% attendance is required and students must test at appropriate level. Students must attend the first session with laptop or tablet to do the test, as a smartphone makes it quite difficult to do in time.
Achieving an entry test score at very high B2 or within C1 range on test given in first session.
