- In 2014, the so-called Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong dominated the news in Germany. The subsequent clashes between protestors and the Hong Kong government regarding the issue of extradition bill and national security law were no less prominent. Almost 30 years after Hong Kong was given back to China, many Hong Kongers question where the model of “one country, two system” is leading them. How did Hong Kong end up in the current situation and what role has China played in it? Recently, the world has turned its eyes on Taiwan, especially after China repeatedly concluded military exercises in Taiwan’s vicinity. Not only neighboring countries in Asia have shown concerns, many wonder what implications it has for the rest of the world. But should we be concerned, when Hong Kong and Taiwan are so far away? To fully understand the current situation and where it all began, one needs historical context regarding the intertwined history of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In this seminar we will look at some and past issues that have an important impact on these countries, and their implication.
At the end of the course students should gain a deeper understanding of the relations between China, Taiwan and Hong Kong and be able to treat the issues objectively from different perspectives.
The course is a mixture of lecture, analysis, student presentations, and group discussions. Through Virtual Exchange, students will have the opportunity to speak with students from other universities to gain other perspectives.
